In the age of remote working and digital media, personal connection has become increasingly important both personally and professionally. This article is part of a series on connection in the workplace. It looks at connection and how we can cultivate them.

Article 1: Why is connection important?

It is a painful irony that when there have never been more ways to connect, our society is suffering an epidemic of loneliness and isolation. Connection is an essential part of being human.  It is at the heart of what keeps us healthy, safe and resilient at home and at work. So how do we cultivate authentic connections that we all need to thrive?

The key to real connection is quality, one-to-one interactions.  Whether it is online or in person, the first step is to take the time to connect one-to-one with the people who matter to you.  This holds as much for your professional life as it does your personal one.

Reach out to ex-colleagues or key clients that have made a difference in your career.  Get in touch with old friends that have been languishing in the depths of your Whatsapp.  These interactions give a real sense of continuity and meaning.

Tip: It is as simple as adding a coffee date to your diary once a week, or a reminder to call an old friend.

Bring your real self to your communications: share topics you really care about; think about who your audience is and what interests them; and, remember – slow down and make it matter!  Authenticity is essential to connection.

Knowing how to connect with those around you isn’t just essential to our individual well-being, it is an essential part of navigating the complexities of professional life.  Those who understand the power of connection and how to cultivate it are well-placed to thrive in the new hybrid reality of the modern workplace.
